Malene is the Nord innkeeper at the Roxey Inn. She sells food and beds while trying to keep her distance from a secret admirer. She also needs your help to resolve a dispute with her neighbor...
Malene offers her services all day long, except between 2am and 6am, when she is sleeping on her bedroll behind the counter.
Malene's attire consists of lower-class clothing and includes a collared shirt, coarse linens and stitched leather shoes. She also carries a small amount of gold in her pockets.
Related Quests[edit]
- The Gravefinder's Repose: Help the innkeeper deal with a local Necromancer.
- Heavy Armor Training: A retired gladiator wants you to find a present for his beloved before he will train you.
- Zero Visibility: Help the citizens of Aleswell become visible again.
Dialogue[edit]
The first time you approach her, she will be relieved and say:
- "Thank goodness someone that can help is here!"
When you talk with her she will get right down to business:
- "I don't know how to make this request any simpler, but to put it bluntly, Raelynn the Gravefinder must die."
The beds at the Roxey are of poor quality, and Malene will be the first to admit it, should you ignore her murderous wishes for the moment:
- Bed
- "There's a bed, of a sort. It ain't much, but it gets the job done. 10 gold a night if you're interested."
- I'll take it.
- "You don't even have the money! Why are you wasting my time? Is this some sort of joke to you?" (do not have 10 gold)
- "It's upstairs, second door on the left. Don't say I didn't warn you."
Asking her about beds again will have her say:
- Bed
- "You've already got a room. Nothin' more I can get for you."
If you leave the conversation without asking about Raelynn, she will angrily comment:
- "Oh, go on! Leave me then!"
Quest-Related Dialogue[edit]
The Gravefinder's Repose[edit]
If you instead ask her to elaborate, Malene will tell you about her unpleasant neighbor:
- Raelynn the Gravefinder
- "A few months ago, that witch of a Necromancer decided to inhabit Moss Rock Cavern just north of my inn. I don't know what she does in there; frankly, I don't want to know. However, I do know that after she arrived, the woods at night became unsafe. I've seen undead of all types walking in the dark woods near the cave entrance. Now, this area's getting a bad reputation and my business has waned. Every day, it seems the number of undead increase. If someone can get into the cave and kill Raelynn, maybe we can stem the tide. Her death pays a handsome bounty. I hope you'll take advantage of the opportunity."
She will send you on your way with:
- "Raelynn will finally get what's coming to her."
After your battle against Raelynn, approaching Malene will have her say:
- "I could use some good news right about now."
She will then greet you:
- "I assume you've dealt with Raelynn appropriately."
- Raelynn the Gravefinder
- "I realize it's in poor taste to celebrate anyone's demise, but Raelynn was evil through-and-through. You've done the right thing. I believe we had a contract. Here's my part."
She will bid you farewell with:
- "Thank you for saving my business, I won't forget it."
The next time you talk to her, a service-minded Malene will say:
- "I'm at your disposal."
- "What can I do for you today?"
When exiting conversation, she will thank you again:
- "Thank you for saving my business, I won't forget it."
Heavy Armor Training[edit]
Heavy Armor master trainer Pranal, a resident of the inn, turns out to be secretly in love with Malene and tasks you with finding a romantic gift from a 'secret admirer':
- Training
- "Training? Goodness me, I'm retired! I'm afraid combat doesn't interest me any more. All that matters to me now is Malene."
- Malene
- "I'm no fool. I know she'd never be interested in an old man like me. It's enough just to be around her, to be in her company. Well, if you're dead set on learning something from me, then how about you do a little something for me, first? Something for her, to be honest. I'd like to get her a gift of a sort. Nothing terribly fancy, and something useful... How about a nice silver pitcher, and a set of four glasses. Here's 50 gold to cover the costs, that should be more than enough."
- Gift
- "When you've got the silver pitcher and the four glasses, let me know. I can't wait to see the look on her face."
When you return with the silverware and inquire on the topic, he asks you for yet another favor:
- Gift
- "Ah, these look lovely. I'm sure she'll like them. You just go give them to her. No need to let her know where they came from; it doesn't matter. So long as she's happy. Just give them to her; say they're from a friend. She doesn't need to know I'm the one responsible."
Unfortunately for Pranal, Malene doesn't have any romantic feelings, but she will still be glad that you bought her a gift from him:
- Gift
- "A gift, for me? Oh, my. This is from Pranal, isn't it? He's such a sweet man. I do enjoy his company, but I'm afraid I just don't have romantic feelings for him. Well, these are simply beautiful. Thank you so much. And there's no need to let him know that I know where they came from. You understand."
If you return to Pranal now, we will offer you master training with the words:
- Gift
- "Ah, wonderful! I'm sure they'll make her happy. It's the least I can do; she's brought so much joy into my life, whether she knows it or not. Thank you for indulging an old man's whims."
Zero Visibility[edit]
If you meet her early in the game and ask her about Rumors she will mention a small settlement known as Aleswell:
- "Still no news out of Aleswell since everybody vanished. Strange business."
- Aleswell
- "A small settlement to the northwest of here, on the other side of the Silver Road to Bruma. We've had travellers through recently that say it's turned into a ghost town. Everyone vanished without a trace."
This will start the Zero Visibility quest.
