The Sphinx is a mythical creature that has been associated with the province of Elsweyr. The nature of these creatures is unknown, as is the time period they come from. There have been two known sphinxes in history, one of which was the Sphinx of Gazia, Agamanus, who has a temple made in their honor. The other was the Sphinx of Canus, Igon.[1] The Jewel of the Sphinx is a prized artifact associated with Khenarthi.[2] At the northwest border of Elsweyr lies Fort Sphinxmoth, but the precise origins of its name remain uncertain.[3] Nevertheless, its name adheres to the naming conventions typical of Imperial forts.[4][5][6] It is meant to safeguard the border region of Reaper's March.[7] There is a type of common cat called the Sphynx, a hairless cat that is popular with some nobles.[8]

Notes[edit]

  • Khenarthi is depicted in tapestries in a form resembling a Greek Sphinx (see below).
