The Gray Cowl of Nocturnal is a Daedric artifact helmet which once belonged to the Daedric Prince Nocturnal before being stolen. It is acquired through the quest The Gray Cowl of Nocturnal.
While equipped, the living will be colored depending on their intent, with non-hostiles being shaded blue and hostiles emitting a red aura. You will be attacked by guards while wearing the cowl, whereas followers are free to wear it without facing their wrath.

Notes[edit]
- The Gray Cowl of Nocturnal has previously appeared in Oblivion. For more information, see the lore article.
- Unlike its previous appearance in Oblivion, the blue inscription down the middle reads "Shadow hide you" without omitting the letter Yahkem (Y), as is common in the Daedric Alphabet.
- Similarly, it is also now considered a piece of Light Armor, with an armor rating equivalent to an elven helmet, though it cannot be tempered.
- This is the only item in the game with a Detect Life enchantment, making it especially useful since it's a constant effect as opposed to a spell. Detect Life was generally available as an enchantment in Oblivion, where this item originated.
