I am empathetic to the allure of necromancy. It seems like a brave, new and unexplored territory. An area of magic where an enterprising mage might accomplish great things and leave a lasting mark on the world. Necromancy may not be well documented in polite circles of magic tutelage. Presuming no such work exists, however, is folly. I always encourage prospective mages to also be students of history as well.
From my readings, however, Necromancy breeds atrocity by nature. If there were acts of heroism or sacrifice committed in the name of necromancy, it stands to reason that they would be just as validated by historical study. The dearth of evidence is damning. There are none of note. The few accounts that say otherwise are either anecdotal or far lost to time.
Suppose that the dead risen in Thibaut's Cairn were done so to serve and protect the nearby Greenhill township from invading forces. That the bones of the dead found new purpose in aiding the living. It's a nice fantasy, but this is not the case, and it will never be the case. Necromancers serve no purpose but their own, and their purpose is to hold dominion over others.
In the case of Thibaut's Cairn, not even leadership can be afforded to these shambling, restless undead. They remain masterless, their forms undoubtedly in agony. Forbidden from rest, forced to serve an absent master forever.
Perhaps, through some careless mishap, he walks among them now. Nonetheless, I can find no good faith argument which posits that the undead have aims beyond an increase to their numbers, to find company in their misery, as they now do in the once-honored tomb of Thibaut's Cairn.
The wave of undeath sweeping through Cyrodiil as a result of the planemeld goes as far as we allow it. I implore you, mages: let us stop it here.
