Shell Game[edit]
After collecting Walks-Softly's keepsakes and getting some disturbing hints about the true basis of his friendship with Anais, he will visit the balcony, where Anais herself will confront him. Anais will then arrive through the archway and confront Walks-Softly.
- Anais Velmont: "And yet you ran away. You betrayed me and left me all alone. Is that how a beloved pet is supposed to behave?"
- Walks-Softly: "Anais, I didn't …. You weren't supposed to be here."
- Anais Velmont: "You were my friend! We were going to do so many things together! And then you ran away like a thief in the night. And that's how you come back to me? Stealing my possessions?"
- Walks-Softly: "What are you saying? I don't understand …."
You can then talk to Anais to try and understand what she wants from Walks-Softly, though the answers may be unpleasant.
- "And you … you're just as bad as Walks. What gives you the right to break into my home and take my belongings?
I should call for the guard and teach you both a lesson. The Velmont family doesn't take kindly to thieves and traitors." - How can you talk to Walks-Softly like that? I thought the two of you were friends.
- "Friends? Maybe when I was a child and didn't know any better. But that lizard is my pet, nothing more. Father gave him to me when I was a young girl.
How else am I supposed to treat a pet that ran away and misbehaves?" - If you feel this way, why were you looking for him?
- "I returned to take control of my family's holdings, clear up old business. He's still my property, and I want my property back.
As for you, I'll let the authorities deal with you. I have no patience for those who would rather steal than work." - Walks-Softly isn't property and he's certainly not staying here. He wants you to forget about him.
- "Forget him? He's all I've thought about these past few years. How he abandoned me, rejected my love and friendship. No, if he wants to be treated like a bad lizard, then that's the way it's going to be.
I've already called for the mansion guards."
After you have spoken with her, Walks-Softly will sadly tell her goodbye, but she will have none of that.
- Walks-Softly: "You've changed, Anais. Either than, or I've been fooling myself this whole time. Goodbye, my old friend."
- Anais Velmont: "Goodbye? I don't think so. Even if you escape from the mansion, my agents will find you and bring you back to me. You're mine, now and forever!"
- Anais Velmont: "Guards! Take these intruders into custody!"
- <Anais runs back into the mansion.>
- Walks-Softly: "I think it's time to leave, don't you? Quickly now!"
Everyone Has A Price[edit]
Later on you will receive a letter from Walks-Softly telling you to meet him at the docks, as he's "figured out a solution to the problem". When you enter one of the small warehouses you will be greeted by a familiar voice.
- Anais Velmont: "You've made a big mistake this time, you … you … lizard! My agents will find me and then I'll have your hide for a hand-bag."
Walks-Softly appears to have kidnapped Anais. After you talk with him to get explanation, he will precede to pretend that you have come back from delivering a ransom demand.
- Walks-Softly: "My associate has returned with the reply from your mansion. Would you like to hear it?"
- Anais Velmont: "Ransom? Is that your plan? My steward is under strict orders not to negotiate with kidnappers."
- Walks-Softly: "He said, and I'm paraphrasing here, "That's preposterous. She's not worth half that much.""
- Anais Velmont: "That old goat! With me out of the way, he's probably hoping to take over the business! Have you contacted my mother?"
- Walks-Softly: "She's in Wrothgar this time of year, isn't she? Discussing trade agreements? We don't have time to reach out to her."
- Anais Velmont: "Untie and we can forget all about this, Walks. For old time's sake. Are you listening to me?"
After you have gone to her Mansion to plant some forged letters, you will find out that in the intervening time the plan went awry after Anais was taken by Wake Walker Pirates to the Shark's Teeth Grotto. Once you have found where she is being kept, Walks-Softly will talk with her, though his plan to make her understand about being kept as a slave doesn't seem to be going well.
- Walks-Softly: "Anais! I'm so glad we found you. And all in one piece, too!"
- Anais Velmont: "No thanks to you! You left me tied up of the docks! What did you think was going to happen? I demand you escort me home—immediately!"
- Walks-Softly: "Right. Of course. I … I just need a moment to confer with my associate."
- Anais Velmont: "Of course you do. Just let me know when you're ready to get me out of here. These pirates have no appreciation of soap and water."
If you talk with her, she will not be impressed by you, "You're Walks-Softly's idiot associate. Don't think I haven't memorized your face!"
After talking with Walks-Softly and helping him make a decision. Anais' reaction will depend on what Walks-Softly does.
If he decides to take her back home, Anais will state that she's going to get revenge eventually.
- "Even though you talked Walks-Softly into letting me go, don't think that absolves you of your guilt in this matter. I was kidnapped! By pirates!
You and that lizard are going to pay for this insult. Oh yes, you're both going to pay!"
However, he decides to leave her with the pirates, she will also be planning her revenge for once she is freed.
- "You're really going to let him do this to me? Leave me here like some sort of servant for a gang of disgusting pirates?
I won't be trapped here forever! I'll get away. And then I'll find you and make you pay for this. Oh, you're going to pay!"
Dialogue[edit]
Depending on the choices made at the Shark's Teeth Grotto, Anais may be found there, changed in appearance and outlook, though she still feels Walks-Softly abandoned her.
- "I see now why Walks-Softly wasn't so keen on the whole slavery thing. But I'm still not sure I forgive him for leaving me twice in the same lifetime."
If she was rescued from the pirates, she can be found outside of the Velmont Estate:
- "When Walks-Softly decided to save me from the pirates, he gave me a lot to think about. I'm not ready to shut down the family business just yet, but I see the value of a little compassion every now and then."
