Valdur was an Atmoran warrior from the late-Merethic Era. In his lifetime, he was one of the Five Hundred Companions who died during the conflict against Sinmur, the half-giant chieftain.[1] Valdur and his shield-sister, Hakra were buried in the Rift's western corners and bound to the region as its caretakers, to forever protect it from threats.[2] He is buried in an underground barrow called Taarengrav, located south of Lake Geir and southwest of Nimalten.[3]

History[edit]

Valdur was one of the Five Hundred Companions, assembled by Ysgramor's youngest son, Ylgar when he and his family returned to Atmora after surviving the Night of Tears. Stories about Skyrim had spread all over Atmora and Ylgar's presence inspired many people to take up arms for his cause. It is currently unknown what ship Valdur was in, but he sailed across the Sea of Ghosts, survived through the Storm of Separation[4] and landed on Hsaarik Head in modern-day Winterhold.[5]

After Ysgramor reclaimed Saarthal, he commanded the Five Hundred Companions to scatter all over the land, defeat anyone that stood in their way and establish themselves in this new land. The Circle of Captains gathered their crews and set forth across ancient Skyrim.[6] What became of Valdur at this time is unknown, but eventually, Ysgramor and the Companions, including Valdur waged war with the giants led by Sinmur.[1][7] Valdur died in battle against Sinmur,[1] but his spirit would be bound to his tomb, Taarengrav to protect the Rift from future threats.[2] Eventually, the half-giant was defeated by Ysgramor, and his spirit was laid to rest ever since.[1]

During the Interregnum in 2E 582, the Order of the Black Worm led by Thallik Wormfather invaded the Rift, in the hopes of resurrecting Sinmur's spirit and conquering the region. Their plan was to bind the spirits of the Rift's protectors, Valdur and Hakra, and use them to enhance Sinmur's power.[2] At around the same time, a team of explorers and dungeon delvers led by Dunmer twins, Kireth and Raynor Vanos were excavating Taarengrav until they were attacked by the Worm Cult.[8] However, the cult was intercepted by the modern-day Companions led by Narir and a battle ensued all over the digging site. The King's Arrow joined the Companions and entered the tomb to stop the cultists but were confronted by Valdur's spirit. The ancient Companion warned the warrior about the cultists, who were breaking the binds that held him there. The warrior was able to defeat the Worm Cult and Valdur was no longer bound to the tomb.[9]

After being freed, Valdur and Hakra assisted Jorunn the Skald-King when they encounter the Worm Cult in Honrich Tower. Valdur recounted the warrior's deeds in Taarengrav and offered one of the Five Hundred Companions to assist the King's Arrow in their attack on the cult. After Sinmur's spirit had been resurrected, both Valdur and Hakra left for Sovngarde and trusted the King's Arrow to defeat Sinmur.[10]
