History[edit]
Like all natural caves, these tunnels once served as the capillaries of Nirn, pulsing with the divine essence of the Aedra.[3] The cave also contains the sunken remains of an ancient Daedric ruin dedicated to the Daedric Prince Boethiah.[2]
The Second Era inhabitants of Vlastarus long considered Nisin Cave to be a dangerous place. The cave was the subject of the old saying, "You've got no more chance than a child at night in Nisin Cave."[4] The cave was home to wisps at the time.[2]
During the Planemeld of 2E 582, Nisin Cave was occupied by a Circle of the Shadowed Path, a cult of necromancers dedicated to Molag Bal. This Circle was led by Volgo the Harrower and had been sent to the cave in search of an ancient relic buried beneath the ground, which the cult planned to use to conquer the Imperial City and all of Cyrodiil in the name of Molag Bal.[5][6][7] The search at Nisin Cave was ostensibly led by a Dremora seeress named Barasatii; her Daedric minions occupied the cave alongside the Shadowed Path cultists. However, Volgo was under orders to claim the relic for Dreadlord Naucratius before Barasatii could find it.[6]
The activities of the Shadowed Path at Nisin Cave were viewed by the inhabitants of Vlastarus as a threat to the town's safety. A local named Nelerien tasked passing Alliance War soldiers with entering the cave and banishing Barasatii to Oblivion for a time.[8] Ultimately, both Barasatii and Volgo were vanquished, eliminating the danger posed by the cult.[2][8]
Circa 3E 433, the cave was unoccupied and served as a den for hostile local wildlife.[1] By that time, the town of Vlastarus had been abandoned. All that remained of the former settlement were the ruins of an Imperial fort.[9]
