Menegur was a Bosmer who was employed as a mercenary in the late Third Era by the King of Solitude who was at war with the King of Farrun. Menegur was a masterful archer, being deadly in mid to long range combat. A friend of his, a fellow mercenary Bosmer by the name of Aerin was a master in light armor techniques, imparting some of this knowledge unto Menegur.

The King of Solitude's army had a brief incursion into Morrowind where they raided a Dunmer caravan for valuable netch armor. Eventually the army would settle in Cascabel Hall in Skyrim. His Bosmer companion Aerin did not enjoy the bitter cold of the northern province and she fled to Morrowind. Soon after, the King of Solitude and his army left Cascabel Hall to engage the enemy, leaving Menegur alone to man the battlements as the rear-guard to cover their retreat.

Shortly into his solitude, Menegur realized the castle was completely bereft of any food and should he not act, he would starve to death. Menegur snuck out of the castle into enemy territory to retrieve golden apples that grew in vast acreage along the castle walls. Utilizing the netch leather armor retrieved during the previous raid in Morrowind, and the light armor skills taught to him by Aerin, Menegur was able to withstand and misdirect the strikes from the enemies who tried to slay him. He repeated this process for four months in order to survive.

Eventually the King of Solitude returned to Cascabel Hall, accompanied by the Count of Cascabel and his foe the King of Farrun, a truce had been called. The army of Farrun showed great respect for the man that they had spent months trying to kill but to no avail, referring to him as the Shadow of the Arbor.

The King of Solitude showed gratitude for how valiantly Menegur defended the keep, but informed him that the Count of Cascabel would be retaking his castle, and also that Menegur would have to reimburse the Count for eating so much of his crops. Menegur shocked the two kings and the Count when he informed them that during his stay he read up on a law established by the Imperial Council in 3E 246 during the reign of Uriel IV that sought to address property disputes in the province of Skyrim. The law stated that any man who occupied a castle for more than three months would be granted the rights and title of the estate. Menegur proudly declared himself the new Count of Cascabel.

Menegur's claim was just and was upheld, his son eventually succeeded him as the Count of Cascabel and they continued to grow the delectable golden apple crop.
