"A cruel race, these dragons. They would rather rule over ashes than allow us to remain free."
—General Renmus, speaking of Laatvulon

Laatvulon, known also as the Demon from the East[1] and the Black Beast,[2] was a black Dragon. His name means Last-Night in the Dragon language;[3] it is a name that conjures a foreboding sense of finality, such as "final darkness," appropriate considering the prophetic possibility he might have paved the way to unleash "a New Moon filled with darkness."[4]

Demon from the East[edit]

While Laatvuolon's exact place of origin is unknown, given his title of "Demon from the East" and his nature as a black Dragon,[1] it is possible he originates from the eastern continent of Akavir, where black and red Dragons are said to originate from.[5] Additonally, he had an ancient rivalry with Nahfahlaar, a red Dragon.[6]

In ancient times, the great Khajiit hero Ja'darri allied with the Dragonguard to defeat Laatvulon. Ja'darri had obtained the Mask of Alkosh and petitioned the Dragon Nahfahlaar to empower it so that she could defeat the Black Beast, but he refused.

Nahfahlaar did however give Ja'darri one of his horns to aid in her battle against his oldest foe. The dragonhorn was effective, but not enough to kill Laatvulon. Ja'darri and the Dragonguard would ultimately succeed in imprisoning Laatvulon in the caverns beneath Doomstone Keep in Elsweyr, but it cost Ja'darri her life. [7][8][4].

Rage of Dragons[edit]

During the Three Banners War, Laatvulon escaped from his prison beneath Doomstone Keep, although it was unclear how this occurred.[7] His escape coincided with the inadvertent release of his master, Kaalgrontiid, from the Halls of Colossus. Laatvulon sought to carry out his master's plan of bringing on the Dark Aeon, intending for Kaalgrontiid to become Akatosh's equal. To this end, Laatvulon created a Khajiiti dragon cult, the New Moon Cult, whose ranks were bolstered by many of the vulnerable Khajiit from the region, such as those who were affected by the Knahaten Flu.

Nahfahlaar later dueled Laatvulon near the city of Senchal in southern Elsweyr, but was overpowered due to Laatvulon's newfound power. The reformed Dragonguard and the Vestige sought Nahfahlaar aid to defeat Laatvulon. This time Nahfahlaar agreed to empower the Mask of Alkosh, which granted the Vestige the power to defeat Laatvulon.[9]

The significance of Laatvulon allowed him to be documented within the Infinite Archive in Apocrypha. There, copies of various entities were subsequently created as maligraphies, creatures composed of vivified ink manifested by stories from books, and served as mindless extensions of the Daedric Lord Tho'at Replicanum. A maligraphy copy of Laatvulon was formed, which was destroyed by an adventurer or two who were aided by augmentations directly from Hermaeus Mora.[10][11][12]
