The Ice Blade of the Monarch (Morrowind)

The Ice Blade of the Monarch (or simply the Ice Blade)[1] is a claymore prized by Tamrielians. The Archmage Almion Celmo of the Summerset Isles created the claymore[2] for great warrior Thurgnarr Assi,[3] who attempted to use it to commit regicide in some distant land, and become the new ruler. The assassination failed and Almion Celmo was imprisoned. Almnion enchanted with the weapon with the soul of a Frost Monarch, and therefore it freezes all who feel its edge. It is believed to be capable of cutting through the walls of ice that are said to line the world.[4] The Ice Blade goes from owner to owner, never settling for long.[3]

The last living dwarf, Yagrum Bagarn, at one point befriended the sorcerer Divayth Fyr.[5] At Fyr's behest, Yagrum Bagarn wrote a book that would later be known as Tamrielic Lore[6]:241 from the notes that he gathered over the centuries, listing the Ice Blade of the Monarch among the artifacts of "unimaginable significance".[3] By the Interregnum, copies of this book circulated throughout Tamriel, providing some general information on the artifact to its readers.[7]

In 3E 427, the Imperial Cult tasked the oracle Adusamsi Assurnarairan with recovering the Ice Blade from Llaren Terano, a worshipper of Molag Bal that was located in the Dunmer stronghold of Rotheran. The bandits there created an arena that housed slaves, which included Adusamsi once she was captured. The Nerevarine was sent to rescue her, as well with tasked with recovering the artifact, leading to the bandits extermination, as well as the freedom of the captives.[8] The Nerevarine subsequently sold it to the Mournhold Museum of Artifacts in 3E 427.[1]

The Ice Blade would later come into the possession of Holrik Frost-Sword, a renowned swordsman. Circa 4E 201, Holrik came into a heated argument with Grenwulf the Brawler, a pugilist with the Fists of Randagulf. Seeking to settle their dispute and showcase their artifact and fighting styles to be superior, the two figures took on a quest to slay a local arachnid that had nested nearby at Cronvangr Cave. Three weeks had passed, and the ambiguity of their fates led the Last Dragonborn to investigate. Amidst the webbed victims were the corpses of the two, whose bickering caused the end of them. The two manifested as restless spirits, finally banding together to put an end to their executioner. Lending their aid, the Last Dragonborn slew the brood mother, helping put the spirits to rest, leaving the Ice Blade and the Fists to be claimed.[9]
