History[edit]
Like all natural caves, these tunnels once served as the capillaries of Nirn, pulsing with the divine essence of the Aedra.[3]
The winding tunnels of Haynote Cave were once home to a thriving fungus-farming operation in the Second Era. Farming activities ended with the outbreak of the Three Banners War.[4]
During the Planemeld of 2E 582, Haynote Cave was occupied by a Circle of the Shadowed Path, a cult of necromancers dedicated to Molag Bal. This Circle, formerly led by Theurgist Thelas, was given to Diabolist Volcatia by Dreadlord Naucratius and tasked with excavating the cave in search of an ancient relic buried beneath the ground. The cult planned to use this relic to conquer the Imperial City and all of Cyrodiil in the name of Molag Bal.[5][6][7] The cultists filled the cave with their undead minions, although ultimately both Volcatia and Thelas were killed by passing soldiers.[2]
Circa 3E 433, the cave was unoccupied and served as a den for hostile local wildlife.[1]
