Fathoms Drift is a large ship graveyard on the Abyssal Sea of Apocrypha, specifically in the Chroma Incognito region.[1] As is perpetuated in Tamrielic myths of the sea, Fathoms Drift is where Hermaeus Mora, the master of the seas, takes ships consumed by the oceans. These ships were usually helmed by people who took the sea and Hermaeus Mora's power lightly or carried forbidden cargo. The dead crews haunt the site as ghosts while the wreckage and rocks are floating in suspension in the sky.[2]
The location is separated between the underground caves and the outer cove. Near the southern cave entrance is the Unquenchable Brazier. Even though it is located in Oblivion, the two moons, Masser and Secunda can be seen from above.[1]
History[edit]
Sometime in the mid-Second Era, the Opulent Gate was caught in a brutal storm and the son of Captain Naanurrel fell overboard and drowned in the sea. In a desperate effort to save his life, Naanurrel made a pact with Hermaeus Mora to save his son in exchange for his undying service to the prince as their guide.[3] Sometime later, Naanurrel's son, Landolvel awakens in Apocrypha and has an adventurer accompany him to Fathoms Drift to find his father. There the ghost of his father reveals the events that transpired and the adventurer acquired Naanurrel's tokens to complete the pact. However, Hermaeus Mora altered the terms of the agreement to which he must give up his life and people's memories of him. It is unknown if the deal went through and Naanurrel remained dead or if he was resurrected at the cost of his son's memories of him.[4]
