Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thanks for your interest in the wiki; however, you seem to have been making multiple edits to a page by not using the show preview button, clogging up the Recent Changes in the process. We appreciate your enthusiasm, but keep in mind that each edit needs to be patrolled, so multiple consecutive edits create an unnecessary hassle on those who patrol. So please utilize this feature! You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. AKB Talk Cont Mail 19:02, 10 May 2024 (UTC)
- I would just like to add that this applies to userspace edits as well. For example, you have edited your user page 131 times in the last two weeks. For that page specifically, I recommend saving your work locally for a while to see if you want to change anything else. I understand the feeling that your user page is an easy page to nitpick constantly! —Dillonn241 (talk) 04:15, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
Hat Notes[edit]
Hey! I've noticed you adding hat notes (those "This page is about X, for the person in Y, see Z" notes). Per the guidelines on hatnotes, they should only be added if there is a reasonable assumption that a user is going to accidentally end up on a page and not realize by the name alone that it isn't the same as the other, similar page. For example, If someone is named Bob and another NPC is named Bob Goodperson, the page at Bob would get a hat note, since both NPCs could be referred to as just Bob in dialogue. But the page of Bob Goodperson wouldn't need a hat note, since the main Bob is never ever referred to with that last name, so anyone landing at Bob Goodperson isn't likely to think it's the same as just Bob.
Most of the pages you added Hatnotes to don't really need those notes. Two NPCs that share a first name but not a last name don't need hatnotes. There are MANY of these, and we don't need to add hatnotes to them all. Jeancey (talk) 18:59, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
Messaging Admins[edit]
Hey KevinM, I was ging to respond to your message on my talk page, but then I saw you messaged several admins with the same question. It's always fine to ask a question to an admin if you want some help with editing or another topic. However, admins are usually only asked to interfere in discussions if there is a conflict. Wiki policies are built by consensus of the community, not the whims of an admin. Our voice should have the same weight as any other user with good arguments, it's just that the community did put their trust in us to handle more sensitive tools on the wiki. Don't see this as a warning, you didn't intend to selectively message outside parties to sway the discussion to your side, so I no harm done. --Ilaro (talk) 09:45, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
Yeah sorry about that. I was trying to figure out if anyone here knew a correct way to write articles for certain characters, guess I went a little too far trying to get to the bottom of it. My bad. --KevinM(talk) 18:11, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
Removing TOCs[edit]
On what basis have we decided to remove TOCs from Lore articles? Some pages, such as Lore:Hammerfell, are way too long to not have a Contents list. --Enodoc (talk) 20:27, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
There I fixed it. --KevinM(talk) 22:48, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
Editing Tips[edit]
Hi Kevin! You've really been doing a great job with your edits lately and I'd like to thank you for it. I do have a couple of suggestions, though, just to make it easier on the patrollers and admins who review and approve people's edits.
First, we ask everyone to put an edit summary on every edit, even if it seems fairly obvious what you've done. It helps explain why you made the edit in case there's any question about it, and flags to the patroller what they should be looking for. It can be as short as a simple abbreviation (i.e., "sp" for spelling) for those times where it's a really minor change, or it can be a sentence or two, if needed. There's a setting under "Gadgets" in your preferences that'll remind you to add one if you forget. I have that enabled myself and it's reminded me to add a summary no small number of times.
Second, it really helps if you combine edits as much as possible. There are times where it's better not to, to be sure, and there are times you hit Save only to then realize you made a mistake <carefully avoids looking in the mirror>, but generally speaking, if a lot of edits are thematically the same, it helps everyone, not just the patrollers, if you can group them together. So, you can do copyediting for the entire page all at once, for example, rather than one or two at a time. If you need to see what something looks like in the interim, there's the "Show Preview" button, or if you want to save as you go, you can copy the text to a sandbox page in your own user space and edit it there to avoid making a lot of edits to the original page.
Thanks again for everything you've been doing, and keep up the good work! – Robin Hood (talk) 16:54, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
Some advice[edit]
You're doing a lot of work and that's commendable, however you have a bad habit of making sweeping changes based on the standards of individual pages while not understanding the nuances. For example not every page needs to follow the same image labeling standards and concept art images don't need to apply to the parenthetical game clarification. You're also changing image descriptions without fully knowing the context of where the image was from. Another example is some of the major race pages having an "Appearance" section, pages mainly section galleries when there is a large amount of images at play, if a gallery only have like five images it really isn't necessary.
Again you've done a lot of good work, but you seem to see the need to fill needs where it isnt necessary in some cases. Another thing you should know is not every character is eligible for a Lore article, I agree with all the ones you've made ones for, but you're really pushing it with some in terms of lack of notability.
Anyways I hope I cleared some things up. Thank you.Tarponpet (talk) 04:58, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for your feedback and insights; I'll make sure to take these nuances into account moving forward. I would also like to clarify that I know not every character is eligible for a Lore article. Have a nice day --KevinM(talk) 05:19, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
Redlinks[edit]
Hi Kevin, I've undone these edits where you've replaced redlinks with anchors to other pages. In general, redlinks are there for a reason and mean that a full article is required. Replacing them with links to books or sections on other pages should not be done for navboxes. —Legoless (talk) 08:59, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
For future reference, I suggest that either you or someone else create those articles, so no one makes that mistake again. --KevinM(talk) 11:17, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- That is not how redlinks work. This is a voluntary project. —Legoless (talk) 11:18, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
-
- I understand that creating article is a voluntary project. I was merely suggesting that creating those articles could help prevent such mistakes in the future. --KevinM(talk) 11:26, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
-
-
- My point is that a redlink is not a mistake and should not be treated as such. It should not be removed; it should be left alone unless you decide to create the article yourself. They serve to highlight gaps in our coverage. —Legoless (talk) 11:28, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

User Page Edits[edit]
Please slow it down with the user page edits. So far this month, in less than two weeks, you have made 119 edits to it. These edits are not only clogging Recent Changes, they are also rather difficult to patrol because your user page takes so long to load.
From here on, please try to limit your user page edit frequency to one edit per day. By that, I mean in a month, 30 edits would be fine, in short bursts or spread across evenly. Just try to average a frequency about a quarter of what you're currently doing. —Dillonn241 (talk) 20:55, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
Destubbing[edit]
Please stop destubbing articles indiscriminately that still need a lot of work. There is a reason they still have the stub tag. The place pages you are destubbing in particular need more work on their walkthroughs. Most of these pages are just data dumps, with no substance. —Dillonn241 (talk) 04:45, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
Tales of Tamriel Images[edit]
Could you please provide the name of the Lorbooks the images accompany within Tales of Tamriel in the image descriptions, that can be important for context. For example the one you uploaded just called Coldharbor was actually accompanying a text about a specific argonian settlement in Coldharbor and in-fact depicted it.Tarponpet (talk) 07:44, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing that out --KevinM(talk) 07:56, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
- On the same subject, did you get permission to upload these images? There's a fair use argument for uploading some of them, but all of them we'd need permission from the publisher. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 07:55, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
-
- Hello, AKB. Just to clarify, are you referring to needing permission from Zenimax or the artist, Jan Pospisil? Understanding this distinction would help in addressing any specific concerns. As you just said there's a fair use argument for uploading them, just look at the licensing section below each image in question. I’d also like to point out that users like Tarponpet, Imperialbattlespire, and The Rim of the Sky have uploaded similar images from The Elder Scrolls Online: Tales of Tamriel books, and these have remained on the site for quite some time without issue. Given this, I believe the images should belong on the site without any problem. I suggest reaching out to Tarp, Imperial, and Rim if you have any further questions. Kind regards --KevinM(talk) 18:04, 25 September 2024 (UTC)

- When I was talking about fair use, I specifically said that the fair use argument applied to using SOME of them. There are four pillars for fair use, with "the amount and substantiality of the portion taken" being one of them. If we upload every image, it actually hurts the previous fair use argument of the previous ones as we are no longer only using a small portion of the work. This was a point I recall raising to at least some of the people you mentioned as previously uploading images as they were doing it, as by only using what we considered the most important images we much more clearly fell onto the side of fair use. We would need permission from a company like Titan Books to use every image in that book. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 18:14, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
-
-
-
- Then I suggest reaching out to a Titan Books representative and creating a Titan Books fair use notice for future uploads. Have a nice day. --KevinM(talk) 18:47, 25 September 2024 (UTC)

- That's not how this works.... If we don't follow fair use, we have to lose ALL of it. Publishers don't grant fair use. If you want to use all of it, you have to pay a LOT, if they even grant it (which they almost never do). I'm going to delete the images you uploaded so that we don't run into issues that would require us to delete them ALL. Jeancey (talk) 18:53, 25 September 2024 (UTC)

- I genuinely thought I was just helping, feel free to do whatever you want with them. --KevinM(talk) 19:01, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
(←) I understand. Copyright is a very tricky and confusing area, especially when so much of what we do allows for basically EVERYTHING being uploaded (for the games). Book publishing is much much stricter and it's harder to understand. I don't think your intent was bad, and your other edits in other areas remain fantastic. Jeancey (talk) 19:06, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. I'll make sure to do more research on the matter and be more careful next time --KevinM(talk) 19:09, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
Broken <ab> tags[edit]
Hey, Kevin. The broken <ab> tags were an indicator that something was broken and needed fixed. If you spot anything like that again, the best place to indicate it is in the #wiki-technical channel on our Discord, if you have that installed. You could also have brought it up on the Administrator Noticeboard. Everything should be fixed now, so I'll be restoring the tags if someone hasn't already beat me to it. We're having a bit of problems with caching, which was why Dram's page still wasn't working even after it should have been. That's an easy fix, though, now that I know it's happening. If you spot the issue on any other pages, first try purging the page or null-editing it (load then resave without doing anything). If those fail, try adding a space somewhere innocuous, like at the end of a line or at the end of a template call so the cache thinks something's changed. Failing all else, just waiting it out will probably also fix the issue whenever the cache times out and refreshes itself. Thanks! – Robin Hood (talk) 03:16, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
Hello. Thanks for the tips! I’ll keep this in mind, and if I spot any similar issues, I’ll report them in the necessary channels. I appreciate the guidance. --KevinM(talk) 03:20, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
