Darnell is a Redguard knight and Champion of the Imperial Legion. Recently stationed to Firewatch, he finds himself at odds with the commander of the Dustmoth Legion here, Thromil Rufus. The Dustmoth Legion have a foul reputation for corruption and dishonest dealings, and Darnell appears keen to counter it. He acts as a mentor figure during the events of the Firewatch Imperial Legion questline, and encourages an honest and by-the-book approach to the numerous narcotics you encounter. Ultimately his actions attract unwanted ire, and Thromil Rufus will order you to kill Darnell during Confrontation at Pahunsabi.
Darnell is also a an expert trainer in Heavy Armor and Axe, and a master trainer of Long Blade.
For protection, he wears an Imperial steel cuirass, a set of Imperial silver greaves, a pair of Imperial silver boots, a pair of Imperial silver bracers, a pair of Imperial silver pauldrons, and an Imperial shield. For clothing, he wears a common shirt and a pair of common pants. He wields an Imperial Templar longsword, and carries 48 gold and a key that unlocks the door (40) to the basement of the Eastern Watchtower.
Like all Redguards, he has a natural resistance to poison and disease, and can boost his health, strength, agility and endurance for a short period of time. In addition, he also knows the following spells: Cure Poison, Great Heal Companion, Resist Fire, Rest of St. Merris, and Seryn's Gift.

Dialogue[edit]
- Greetings:
- "Good meeting you, %PCName. I'm Darnell, %Rank of the Dustmoth Legion Garrison. If you need help from the Legion, you talk to me."
- "Good to see you, %PCName. Need anything?"
- Background:
- "Name's Darnell. I'm the Champion of the Dustmoth Legion garrison. Do you need training?"
- Dusters:
If you are a member of the Imperial Legion:
- "That's what the people call the Dustmoth Legionnaires. People resent the soldiers here. And rightly so. There's no sense of duty or loyalty to the people in the Dustmoth Garrison. Only loyalty to one-another. Watch yourself around them, %PCRank."
- Firewatch:
- "I'm new in town, but I've done some reading. Talked to people. Firewatch has been through a great deal, that much is clear. But here it stands, a beacon of Imperial strength in the far east, even after all the troubles. It's inspiring, in its own way."
- Orders:
- "You'll want to talk to Vycius about that. But between you and me, you're probably better off seeking orders from the Redwing Legion Garrison in Helnim, or one of the Vvardenfell garrisons like the Deathshead Legion Garrison in Gnisis. If you do end up serving here, promise you'll talk to me about any orders you think are suspect. I'll help you sort them out."
- "You'll want to talk to Thromil about that.
After completing 'Confrontation at Pahunsabi':
- "Nothing to do around here, these days. You'll want to head to Old Ebonheart, or one of the Vvardenfell garrisons."
- the champion:
If you are a member of the Imperial Legion:
- "That's me. I made a name for myself in the Bend'r-Mahk intervention, and since then I've held a lot of posts in the Empire's far-flung corners. Ostensibly, I'm charged with training the men and keeping things above-board. But it's not easy."
If you are at least Knight Errant rank in the Imperial Legion, and have completed 'A Sweet Deal':
- "I'm familiar with the bloodshed of the Simulacrum. I saw action in Bend'r-Mahk, cleaned up a couple other loose ends after Jagar Tharn was thwarted. And I've read up on what happened here in Firewatch. These Dusters have been through a lot. But it doesn't excuse their disregard for the people, or their flagrant self-interest. For the good of Firewatch, we need to curb their excesses."
- Unrest in Cyrodiil City:
If you are at least Knight Errant rank in the Imperial Legion:
- "It's true, %PCName. Things are looking bad in the heartland. But it's not our job to worry about that. All we can do is try to keep the provinces stable. But in Cyrodiil? It's up to the gods."
- War of Lies:
- "The war between Firewatch and Old Ebonheart? I wasn't around then. It's my understanding that a lot of the issues here in Firewatch were caused by that whole mess. All the good men died at Nivalis. When you're ever there, you can still see the damage."
Fighters Guild: The Potion Seller's Past[edit]
- pitiful guardsmen:
- "I do what I can, but it's tough. There's lots of rot out here in Firewatch. If I had more colleagues with a proper sense of duty, I might be able to do a bit more. But we can't have it all, can we?"
- protect Mist-Eyes:
- "A visitor kicking up trouble? I'd come tell him to quit it, but I'm not exactly keen on leaving this lot unattended. Tell you what, I'll write you a "letter of arrest". No legal weight, of course, but you might be able to scare him off."
- Continue:
- "Here you go. Show him this, make a speech, really try to scare him. And if he's not impressed, scare him a bit more. Just don't let it get to the point where I've got to make good on this. I doubt I could get this lot out of bed long enough to try approaching him, much less restraining him and taking him to the dungeons." (You receive Darnell's "Letter of Arrest")
- "Best of luck."
- "Took care of it? Good for you, %PCName. It's good that your guild's able to pick up some of the slack when it comes to keeping the peace."
Imperial Legion: Shipment to Nivalis[edit]
- Greetings:
- "Oh, %PCName, it's you. I'm Darnell, Champion of the Dustmoth Legion. Glad I caught you. I heard Vycius asked you to deliver a letter from the Commander to Nivalis. I know this is going to sound strange, but I'd like you to show me that letter. Will you?"
- Yes.:
- "Hmm. Interesting stuff. I somewhat doubt the Commander's sincerity, but at least he's not pulling anything with Commodore Rone. Why don't you read up as well? If you're going to work in Firewatch, you might do well to learn its history. And if you ever get any orders you think are fishy, I'll be in the watchtower at the east end of the town. I can help you sort them out." (You receive a copy of Ash and Blood: Volume II)
-
- No.:
- "Fair enough. I'm sure it's for her eyes only. And you've got your orders. But if you ever get orders you think are suspicious, talk with me. I'll help you sort it out. I'll be in the watchtower at the east end of the town."
-
- Why?:
- "I just want to make sure the Commander's not doing anything... sneaky. If you've been around Firewatch for very long, you've probably heard about our garrison's problems. Lot of crooks and drunkards in the ranks, all the way to the top. I'll just give the note a look-over, then hand it right back." (See 'Yes' and 'No' options above)
- "Good seeing you, %PCName. I'll be in the Eastern Watchtower if you need anything."
- Shipment to Nivalis:
- "Thanks for keeping me updated."
If you refused to show him the letter:
- "No worries, %PCName."
If you refused to show him the letter the first time, but talk to him about it again at the Eastern Watchtower:
- "Will you show me that letter, %PCName?"
- Yes.:
- "Hmm. Interesting stuff. I somewhat doubt the Commander's sincerity, but at least he's not pulling anything with Commodore Rone. Why don't you read up as well? If you're going to work in Firewatch, you might do well to learn its history." (You receive a copy of Ash and Blood: Volume II)
-
- "Thanks for keeping me updated."
-
- No.:
- "No worries, I'm sure it's for her eyes only."
- Thromil:
- "He's the commander of the garrisons in Telvannis District. And a villain of the highest order. All he cares about is his personal security and comfort -- not about the Empire, or its people, or even about Firewatch. Watch yourself around him."
- Vycius:
- "Thromil's most loyal stooge. He'll act formal enough, but don't let it fool you. He's got one goal: keeping himself and his Commander comfortable."
Imperial Legion: Exotic Fauna[edit]
- agent's contraband:
- "I've got a suspicion this "agent" isn't any sort of Legion affiliate at all, %PCRank. I'll bet when you find the guy, he won't be in a uniform -- he'll just be some rank smuggler that Vycius has a deal with. If I'm right, don't give it to Vycius. I want you to turn any contraband he's got over to me. I'll have it disposed of properly."
- "You found the agent? But you don't have his contraband? Well, I'm sure Vycius won't like that. If you do find it, bring it me, I'll dispose of it."
- "You found that agent? Did he have any skooma? If he did, you should give it to me."
- He had two bottles of skooma. [Give him the bottles.]:
- "Thanks. I'll have this properly disposed of -- in the meantime, have this. And when you report back to Vycius, you can just say he drank it all. There's no reason he wouldn't believe you." (Removed 2 bottles of Skooma from your inventory, and you receive 100 gold)
-
- No.:
- "Alright, then. Suppose there's nothing to do but go tell Vycius."
If you took the skooma to Vycius Pitio:
- "There's nothing to do about it anymore."
If you let Darnell confiscate the skooma:
- "Thanks, %PCName. Good to see you're not just going to be Thromil's stooge."
[edit]
- shipment of contraband:
- "I'm sure it's as obvious to you as it is to me that this deal Vycius has with the Oarsman is totally illegal. See if you can't rat him out to the captain Garius Rulo on the ship. If you do that, the whole deal will be spoiled, and Vycius can't get his skooma."
- Why is Vycius asking me to get him skooma?:
- "I'm going to let you in on something people outside the Garrison don't really know. The soldiers around here have this skooma racket, see -- they're the law, so it's very easy for them to get skooma into the city. Then, they sell it to local dealers, and line their pockets with the gold. It's a disgrace, frankly, and if you can throw a wrench in it I'd be grateful."
-
- How are you so sure this is illegal?:
- "Oh, come on now. If you think this is above-board, why don't you tell the Captain that one of his Oarsmen is sliding contraband under the table to the local Legion Garrison? I'm sure he'd have choice words to say."
If you brought the skooma to Vycius Pitio:
- "I suppose you'll fit right in here, %PCName." (Disposition down by 10)
If you told Garius Rulo about the skooma:
- "Good going, %PCName. You did the right thing. Talk with me after you've reported to Vycius, I'll have something for you."
- "Good going, %PCName. You did the right thing. Here, take this. A book from back home. I think you'd be interested." (You receive a copy of Redguards, History and Heroes)
- "Good going, %PCName. You did the right thing."
Imperial Legion: Taxing the Poor[edit]
- collect fines:
- "I don't think you should collect these fines. These people haven't done any wrong, at least not enough to die or go to prison. Vycius just wants some extra coin. If you paid the fines yourself, the people of Firewatch would be grateful, as would I."
- "I heard how you paid the fines of those commoners yourself. You did a good thing, %PCName, and that deserves a reward. Here. A little something from my homeland. I think you can learn from it. Keep up the good work." (You receive a copy of The Book of Circles)
- "You did a good thing, %PCName."
If you collected the fines OR if Jinar Kammu, Kul-Tei, or Folstar the Whaletooth are dead:
- "I don't think you did the right thing, %PCName. But I suppose you had to follow orders."
Imperial Legion: A Sweet Deal[edit]
- confiscate contraband:
- "I'm sure you're noticing a pattern with these "agents of the Legion", %PCName. Make no mistake: Vycius is ordering you to smuggle moon sugar into the city for him. So here's what you should do -- go to those smugglers in Helnim, and get the moon sugar, but don't sell it to S'rabhi. Tell Vycius the smugglers didn't have anything, then give it to me so I can dispose of it. That way, we'll deny him his gold and keep the sugar off the streets."
- "Tell Vycius the smugglers didn't have anything, then give it to me so I can dispose of it. That way, we'll deny him his gold and keep the sugar off the streets."
If you gave Vycius Pitio his cut:
- "Maybe you didn't really sell the sugar to that dealer, maybe you did. But Vycius still got his money, and he and Thromil got to line their pockets. I don't think you did the right thing."
If you lied to Vycious Pitio and don't have the moon sugar:
- "You've stopped Vycius from profiting, which is all right enough, but where's all the sugar? You didn't sell it and pocket the money, did you?"
If you lied to Vycius Pitio and have the moon sugar:
- "Good work, %PCName. You've stopped a good amount of sugar from getting to the streets of Firewatch, and Vycius isn't a drake richer for it. I'll take this and dispose of it properly. Here, take this. A tome I purchased many years ago, when I was visiting Anvil. I think you'd find it interesting." (Removed 20 Moon Sugar from your inventory, and you receive a copy of Manual of the Red Sword)
- "Good work, %PCName."
Imperial Legion: The Templar's Trifles[edit]
- "I can't imagine what Thromil thinks he's going to accomplish getting Arlo on his side. It could be bad news. But the Red Templars are famously hard to control. I don't think much will come of this."
- "Well, he's here in Firewatch now. Can't say I'm delighted."
If Arlo Ajaxus died during the quest:
- "I heard of Arlo's fate. It is tragic, but at least he isn't on Thromil's side."
Imperial Legion: Death or Dishonor[edit]
- duel of honor:
- "That's rather delicate. Grala is certainly being rash, but I'd hate to see her die. I think you should see if you can't get her to stand down and retract the challenge. If you do that, you won't have to kill her."
If Grala gra-Gurakh is dead:
- "It's a shame what happened, but I suppose it was her own fault in the end."
If you persuaded Grala gra-Gurakh to withdraw her challenge:
- "Good work getting Grala to stand down. She didn't deserve to die. After you've reported to Thromil, and she's had time to think, you should go talk to her. I'm sure she'll be grateful."
- "Good work getting Grala to stand down. She didn't deserve to die. Why don't you go talk to her? Now that she's had time to think, I'm sure she's grateful."
- "Good work getting Grala to stand down. She didn't deserve to die."
Imperial Legion: Traitor in Onimushili[edit]
- Traitor in Onimushili:
- "Thromil's sending you to kill Olfin? I know you're probably expecting me to tell you to let him go, but he's still a Daedric cultist. Thromil wants him dead for all the wrong reasons, naturally, but he and his friends in Onimushili are still public menaces Go on and do what Thromil says."
If you sided with Darnell for the quests 'Naval Negotiations', 'Taxing the Poor', and 'A Sweet Deal':
- "Thromil's sending you to kill Olfin? I know you're probably expecting me to tell you to let him go, but he's still a Daedric cultist. Thromil wants him dead for all the wrong reasons, naturally, but he and his friends in Onimushili are still public menaces. In fact, I've got some spare scrolls that I think you'll find useful. Take them. Good luck." (You receive 2 Scrolls of Warrior's Blessing)
- "Good luck on your mission, %PCName. And be careful."
- "Good work on that, %PCName."
Imperial Legion: Confrontation at Pahunsabi[edit]
- Greetings:
- "Oh, %PCName. It's you. What are you doing here?
- Thromil Rufus sent me to kill you. Prepare to die.:
- "Is that so? Very well, then. I don't mind ridding Morrowind of another one of that cur's cronies. Have at you!" Goodbye (He attacks you)
- If you sided with Darnell during the quests 'Naval Negotiations', 'Taxing the Poor', and/or 'A Sweet Deal':
- "I'd thought better of you, friend. But I'll do what I must." Goodbye (He attacks you)
-
- Thromil Rufus sent me to help you clear out the smugglers.:
-
- Thromil Rufus sent me to kill you, but I'm not doing that. He says there's some incriminating material in this cave he doesn't want you to see.:
- "Interesting. I suppose you've got your limits after all. If we get that evidence, I might finally be able to do Thromil some real damage. I'd bet the leader, Thenim, would have it. Lead the way." Goodbye (He follows you)
- If you sided with Darnell during the quests 'Naval Negotiations', 'Taxing the Poor', and/or 'A Sweet Deal':
- "Good work. Let's run them out, and get whatever it is Thromil doesn't want getting out. The leader, Thenim, probably has it. Lead the way." Goodbye (He follows you)
- "Lead the way." Goodbye
If you have the incriminating letter:
- "What's that letter you've got?"
- If you have not read it:
- I haven't read it.:
- "Well, take a look." Goodbye
- If you have read it:
- Sensitive material. For the commander's eyes only.:
- "Come, now. Don't be like that. That's something incriminating, right? I've got a bit of sway with the Order of Firewatch. We could start cleaning up the garrison if we had some concrete evidence to hit Thromil and his cronies with. We could get Firewatch back on its feet. Give it to me, %PCName."
- Very well.:
- "Thank you, %PCName. I'll be showing this to the knights. Meet me at the Dustmoth Legion Garrison when you're done here -- the east tower, where Vycius usually hangs out." Goodbye (Removed Letter from V.P. from your inventory)
-
-
- No. I'll be giving this to the commander.:
- "If that's how it's got to be, then I'll take it off your corpse. I'm sorry, but I'll do whatever I need to do to save Firewatch." Goodbye (He attacks you)
-
-
- An incriminating letter from Vycius Pitio to the smugglers.:
- "Is that right? Excellent! Give it here. I'll use this to get him expelled. Doesn't sound like we can touch Thromil, but at least we can bag Vycius. Stop the flow of skooma into the city. That's a good deal." (See options 'Very well.' and 'No...' above)
After completing the quest and helping him take down Vycius Pitio:
- "Business as usual here in Firewatch. What brings you, %PCName?"
