Originally a recitation designed to impress others with long swaths of memorization, this work of oration can be vastly different every time it is recalled. It begins the same with every iteration, but contestants must adapt to each additional stanza given by the others in the contest. The longest game of Ervald's Sail lasted more than three weeks and kept the village of Karthwatch sane during the long dark of winter. This version has been recorded by Hogbold and is faithful to the game of Ervald's Sail as it occurred in 2E 434 at a celebration in the newly established village of Shor's Stand on Solstice. Audience participation lines are recorded in parentheticals.

Ervald, hapless Ervald, worst angler in the whole wide world-vald
His sail is torn, right in the middle
What was he to do?
He needed a needle, that Ervald, to fix his torn sail.
(The sail that tore right in the middle!)
He needed a needle to fix his sail, but who would provide him one?
Ervald went to the smith who stoked the fires to make the needle needed to fix his sail.
(The sail that tore right in the middle!)
But the smith had no stone. Even with fires stoked there was no needle for Ervald to fix his sail.
(Ervald, hapless Ervald, worst angler in the whole wide world-vald.)
Ervald sought a stone, but who would provide him one?
Ervald went to the miner who excavated ore to give to the smith who stoked the fires to make the needle needed to fix his sail.
(The sail that tore right in the middle!)
But the miner could not extract the ore without first eating a meal, even though the mine was full of it.
(Ervald, hapless Ervald, worst angler in the whole wide world-vald.)
Ervald promised to get a meal, but who would provide him one?
Ervald went to the chef who baked cakes to feed the miner who extracted ore to give to the smith who stoked the fires to make the needle needed to fix his sail.
(The sail that tore right in the middle!)
But the chef's fire went cold in the night and would not light without wood. He could bake no cakes.
(Ervald, hapless Ervald, worst angler in the whole wide world-vald.)
Ervald went to get wood, but who would provide him some?
Ervald went to the woodcutter who chopped lumber to give to the chef who baked the cakes to feed the miner who extracted ore to give to the smith who stoked the fires to make the needle needed to fix his sail.
(The sail that tore right in the middle!)
And this, the woodcutter could do!
(Ervald, hapless Ervald, worst angler in the whole wide world-vald.)
This the woodcutter could do!
The woodcutter loaded lumber to take to the chef who baked the cakes to feed the miner who extracted ore to give to the smith who stoked the fires and made the needle Ervald needed to fix his sail.
Ervald, hapless, Ervald, worst angler in the world wide world-vald.
And now his day is through!
