The Lessons of Kyne, Wisdom of Shor
A captain's account of quick actions saving their ship during a storm

"Heed the wind, child, for it is Kyne's warning and her gift."

My father's words echo in my mind as I raise the sails and head toward shore. The wind has changed, and dark, heavy clouds above promise a storm is coming—one I don't want to be caught in.

My father disapproved of my chosen profession. I come from a long line of farmers in Shor's Stand, and my father hoped I would continue that trade. But I never wanted to be tied to the land. The sea called. Kyne had chosen me. I could feel her embrace every time a gust ruffled my braids when I stepped onto the deck of a ship.

Tradition be damned. If my father's only daughter was to be sailor, so be it. I knew it was my destiny, and one that would bring me glory in Sovngarde at the end of my days.

I took to the sea, swiftly moving up the ranks of the tiny fishing boat crew I'd signed on to. It wasn't long before I was first mate, and by then I'd saved up enough to buy my own ship and hire on a crew. I wanted to leave Solstice behind, to sail the wider waters and find glory and trade beyond our humble shores.

My maiden voyage nearly ended in disaster. We'd been at sea for several weeks, having completed our first run to Pyandonea. The keel floated low in the water, laden as we were with goods to sell back in Sunport. I remembered my first captain's warnings about overburdened ships. They were easy targets for pirates, and easier targets for Kyne's wrath. I disregarded them all, thrilled as I was to be in command of my own vessel.

It was this folly that nearly threw me from the deck, when a massive wave crashed into us from the formerly calm ocean. In an instant, we were struck by the force of Kyne's power, as waves battered the ship and violent gales whipped the sails to and fro. I made a silent promise then, that if we made it through, I would never again ignore the signs of the sea, and I would listen to Kyne when she spoke to me.

The sea continued to churn, when a Shor-blessed idea struck me. That great fox must have lent me some of his wisdom, for I realized that the ship was struggling to remain upright because our cargo was woefully imbalanced in the hold. I ordered my crew belowdecks. They looked at me like I had a stone for a brain until I barked out, "Shor rewards action, you pale-arsed fools! So either get ready to meet him in Sovngarde or obey me now!" That got them moving. We frantically restacked the crates and barrels we carried.

Suddenly, the ship stopped swaying so violently, and the hull returned to its normal alignment in the water. I knew I'd pleased Shor with my quick thinking, even if I wouldn't be meeting him that day.

The storm continued to toy with us for a time, but we weathered it bravely. At last, the sky cleared and a hearty breeze sprang up to speed us back home.

That night, we unloaded our goods and made a mighty profit. We spent the evening feasting and drinking in Shor's name at a tavern. It was good to be on dry land again, even I had to admit it. It was even better when I returned to Shor's Stand with gifts for my father, to honor his wise words.

Next time Kyne tries to teach me a lesson, or Shor seeks to share his wisdom, I plan to pay attention and heed them well.
