Ustengrav is an ancient Nordic barrow found in the wilderlands of Hjaalmarch, in the province of Skyrim. Located on the northeast edge of the Drajkmyr marshlands, it is the site of a Word Wall[1] and the burial place of Jurgen Windcaller, the founder of the Greybeards way back in the early First Era.[2]

History[edit]

Ustengrav ca. 2E 582

Ustengrav is known as the burial ground for Jurgen Windcaller. In life, he was one of the strongest Tongues in his time, serving the First Empire of the Nords during the Conquest of Morrowind. He later left the military to pursue a life in meditation at the Throat of the World where he later founded the Greybeards and built the monastery, High Hrothgar.[3] Eventually, he passed away and he was interred in Ustengrav's depths, with his signature horn placed on the mantle of his tomb.[2]

As of 2E 582 the burial site was already abandoned and access to the inner sanctum was sealed.[4]

The inner sanctum apparently remained untouched until 4E 201. A bandit clan took residence in the barrow's entrance halls as their redoubt, but an enclave of warlocks attempted to take over the crypt, which resulted in a skirmish that inadvertently awakened the draugr. At that point, the Last Dragonborn arrived at Ustengrav and witnessed the conflict first hand. They managed to delve deep into the ancient fane's catacombs and reach the inner sanctum to retrieve the horn. But by then, the horn of Jurgen Windcaller was taken by an unknown figure, in an attempt to catch the warrior's attention.[5]
