Before the quest:

"Welcome to Ivarstead. Stay out of trouble and we'll both be happier."

If you choose to report about Nilwen about her squatting, he will reveal that Nilwen has been trying to get people killed fighting giants so she can loot their bodies:

There's a Bosmer squatting in a shack outside town.

"Oh, her. Little Bosmer lass with a sob story about great beasts and how helpless she is?"

That's the one.

"She lures people in, tricks them into fighting nearby giants. The giants kill them, she takes their valuables. Then on to the next sucker."

Should I go after her?

"She's long gone by now. No fool, that one. Moves on once locals are wise to her."

I smelled a rat, but maybe not soon enough.

"Ha! That'd do it for most around here. Polish their egos to a fine sheen.
Relatives of one of Nilwen's victims went looking for her a few months ago, three big Nord men. They turned up in the river, slit from ear to ear."

If you choose to report to him about Nilwen's crimes and you exit the conversation before turning the quest, he will alternatively say:

"Take care in Ivarstead, friend. You're one of the smart ones."

Smart? Because I reported Nilwen? (Leads to quest completion dialogue)

After the quest if you choose to report Nilwen's squatting to him instead of helping her further:

"Take care in Ivarstead, friend. You're one of the smart ones."

After the quest if you choose to help Nilwen, you can still mention to him about what you went through:

"Nice to see a new face in town. Be careful though. Lots of travelers have been disappearing lately."

Do you know a Bosmer named Nilwen?

"Had a run-in with her, eh? At least you're still alive. Not many folks who meet her live to tell about it. Most end up floating in the river."

What's she up to?

"She goes after travelers, folks no one will miss. She plays with them a bit then somehow gets them to attack the local giants.
The travelers die and she takes their stuff. Quite a scam."

I think I killed one of her giants.

"You did? Well, that'll make out roads safer for a while. That's good news, friend!"
